Summary
It all starts with a death. Many deaths, actually, this book is coming from the man who wrote Jurassic Park. The main character's--Peter's--brother was the main casualty, and a couple of FBI agents, who die from mysterious cuts that bleed the men dry. Meanwhile, Peter works at a multi-billion cooperation called Nanigen, which specializes in developing advanced nanotechnology. Once he gets word (and video) of his brother's "disappearance," he and a group of scientists are offered the chance to travel to Hawaii in order to conduct research. They take the opportunity--only to be betrayed by the man who is head of the program(Vincent Van Drake) and shrunk into extremely small size because they discovered that Eric Jensen's death was arranged.
After they were dumped into the jungle a couple miles away, they must cope with the environment and their own conditions. The characters clash at first, but are eventually all become united due to their unique situation. Many of them die along the quest to reach Nanigen, killed in vicious ways. One man gets ripped apart by a swarm of ants, one drowns in a flood, one pops after getting bit by a spider, one of them gets shot by a harpoon--the main character, actually, which switches up the narrative a bit.
There end up being only three survivors. Karen gets eaten by a bird but is rescued by Rick, who had to fight off a wasp that stings Danny and lays an egg in his arm. Eventually, they find a survivor who has lived, shrunken like them for years and receive his help to get back to the compound. All the while other, much larger people, are on the hunt for the group. Danny ends up panicking and requesting for help from none other than Drake, who sends the men to exterminate the characters like bugs. They three barely escape, at the expense of Ben. Danny ends up dying, result of a helicopter crash. Eric--Peter's brother--ends up being alive and attempts to kill the Nanigen program. Karen and Rick end up destroying Drake's headband, which controls the bots, and then no one has control--so Drake dies. Karen and Rick--the characters who hated each other in the beginning--end up falling in love. Although, the tech remains existing, and the book ends with a cliffhanger which sets it up for a second one. Unfortunately, Chrichton died before he could write it.
